Hiawatha Police join traffic safety campaign

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Police Department is reminding drivers to buckle up and put their phones down as part of a statewide traffic safety campaign running through October 31.

Drivers can expect increased law enforcement on local roads during the campaign, which aims to reduce traffic fatalities by addressing seat belt use and distracted driving.

Police say sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for about five seconds. At 55 miles per hour, that's the length of a football field traveled without looking at the road.

Kansas law prohibits handheld cell phone use in active school zones where reduced speed limits are enforced and in designated construction zones when workers are present. Hands-free use is still allowed.

The campaign coincides with Buckle Up Phone Down Day on October 28, encouraging drivers to buckle up and put their phones down on every trip.
