(KAIR)--A Leavenworth man has been convicted of second-degree murder and several other charges stemming from a deadly wreck during a police pursuit in Basehor last year.
A release from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson says 23-year-old Johmelo Marki Mapp-Jenkins entered a no-contest plea Tuesday in Leavenworth County District Court, during the second day of his jury trial.
The charges stem from an August 2025 pursuit that began when a Basehor police officer attempted to stop Mapp-Jenkins for speeding on Leavenworth Road.
Authorities say Mapp-Jenkins initially stopped, but fled as the officer approached his vehicle, eventually reaching speeds exceeding 95 miles per hour.
The pursuit ended when Mapp-Jenkins crashed near 147th Street and Parallel Road, then fled on foot, leaving two unconscious passengers behind.
His front-seat passenger later died from her injuries, while a backseat passenger suffered severe injuries.
In addition to second-degree murder, Mapp-Jenkins was convicted of aggravated battery, fleeing police, and two counts of leaving the scene of a wreck involving death or serious injury.
Sentencing is scheduled for November 13.
