Planned marathon prompts driver caution

(KNZA)--Doniphan County drivers are being urged to use caution Saturday during an overnight marathon and ultra marathon.

Emergency Management Coordinator Scott Morris told the County Commission Monday the October 24th event is sponsored by Show Me Your Free State as a fundraiser for the Benton High School Cross Country team.

The route ranges from a half-marathon to a 100-mile ultra marathon, beginning at Rosecrans Memorial Airport and following the Elwood Gladden Drainage District levee, Valencia Road, Treece Road and East St. Joseph Street in Wathena, with the route repeated.

Sheriff Mark Allen has coordinated with K-DOT and event organizers to post electronic warnings at Treece Road and East St. Joseph Street. Signs and aid stations will also be set up along the route.

Runners will wear reflective gear and headlamps. Emergency Management will send a TextCaster alert urging residents to use caution when driving in the area.
