(KNZA)---A Purple Heart mural being painted in Hiawatha and a proposed dispatch services agreement with the city were discussed during Monday’s Brown County Commission meeting.
Commissioner Richard Tesoriero said two Kansas City-based artists began painting the mural this week on a building at North Sixth and Oregon Streets.
The goal is to have the mural completed by the Hiawatha Halloween Frolic on October 31st, ahead of the original Veterans Day target.
About 30 to 40 Purple Heart recipients have been identified in Brown County, including seven who are still living. Their names will be added to the mural as they are identified. The project is being funded through donations.
Tesoriero also updated commissioners on discussions with Hiawatha officials about a proposed dispatch services agreement.
The county has offered to provide dispatch services for 125-thousand dollars a year, with a two-point-seven-five percent annual cost-of-living increase.
The city wants a one-year notice requirement if either side decides to end the agreement. Officials also discussed a longer contract term, with the annual cost-of-living increase delayed until the third year and reduced to two percent.
Tesoriero said he had no problem with the proposed changes.
County Counselor Austin Parker agreed to draft an agreement based on the terms discussed.
