KS Appeals Court brings special session to Atchison's BC

(KAIR)--The Kansas Court of Appeals will hold a special session in Atchison next week, giving the public an opportunity to see the state's appellate court at work.

A release Friday from the Kansas Judicial Branch says a three-judge panel will hear oral arguments in two cases Tuesday morning, October 27, beginning at 9:30, at Benedictine College's new Moritz Library in D'Aniello Hall.

Chief Judge Sarah Warner will preside over the proceedings, joined by Judges Karen Arnold-Burger and Rachel Pickering.

The session is open to students and the public. Following the arguments, the judges will answer questions about the Court of Appeals and the judicial process.

Warner says holding proceedings at colleges across Kansas provides an educational opportunity while allowing the court to connect with communities outside its regular courtrooms.

The location is also significant. Benedictine's new library was modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were debated and signed.

Attorneys for each side will have 15 minutes to present their arguments and answer questions from the judges. Written decisions are generally issued within 60 days.
