(KNZA) —The Villas of Beautiful Maples housing project in Hiawatha is returning to its original proposed site west of Bruning Park.
The City Commission voted 3-to-2 Monday night to return to the location. Mayor Becky Shamburg and Commissioners Laura Tollefson and Dave Middendorf supported the move, while Brian Shefferd and Tom Martin opposed it.
The commission had also been considering about 1.5 acres at 913 South Third Street.
A motion by Shefferd to delay the decision until firmer cost estimates were available failed on a 2-to-3 vote.
Supporters said costs are better known at the original site, where the city’s costs are estimated at more than 800-thousand dollars. Shefferd said the city doesn't have the money for either location.
City Administrator Brad Scott said the city plans to seek a state revolving loan to cover its share, with repayment coming from economic development sales tax funds.
The commission voted in September to move the proposed duplex development to existing vacant lots within the city following opposition to the original site. Developer Dave Anderson urged commissioners to make a decision, citing project deadlines.
In other business, commissioners agreed to consider changing a 1977 ordinance limiting trailer parking on city streets to two hours. Local resident Matthew Haws urged the commission to make a change. The issue will be placed on the next meeting's agenda.
Mayor Shamburg also recognized Fire Chief Patrick Sheldon for 15 years of service with the department.
