Atchison drainage addressed with $102K Commission approval

(KAIR)--Stormwater drainage improvements are planned at several locations in Atchison, following action by the City Commission last week.

Commissioners approved a $102,200 contract with Hagerty and Mack Excavation, of Shawnee, for the replacement of deteriorating stormwater inlets and underground drainage pipes. The agreement also includes an additional $5,000 in change order authority.

Public Works and Utilities Director Clinton McNemee told commissioners during their October 19 meeting that the project will address some of the city's ongoing drainage problems.

McNemee said several stormwater inlets throughout Atchison have deteriorated, with problems ranging from broken or collapsed inlet structures to underground pipes that have rusted, deteriorated or become blocked.

The improvements will include two stormwater inlets and connecting pipes in the 700 block of U Street, two inlets and pipes in the 1600 block of Riley Street, replacement of stormwater piping connecting two inlets on 17th Street near Commercial Street, and one inlet and associated piping in the 900 block of North 5th Street.

McNemee said the contractor has indicated work could begin soon. However, he would prefer that the projects on Riley and 17th Streets, near Atchison High School, be completed during Christmas break to minimize traffic disruptions.

Both projects will require cuts across the streets to replace underground drainage pipes.

The city has budgeted $150,000 annually for stormwater improvements as part of its capital improvement program.

McNemee said the approved work represents only a portion of the drainage repairs needed throughout Atchison. Additional projects are expected to come before commissioners within the next three months.
