Pet safety a must during haunted holiday

(KAIR)--With Halloween approaching, a Kansas State University veterinarian is reminding pet owners that some holiday traditions can pose serious risks to their animals.

K-State veterinarian Susan Nelson says Halloween candy should be kept out of pets' reach, particularly chocolate, raisins and products containing the artificial sweetener xylitol, which can be toxic to animals.

Decorations, electrical cords and candles can also pose hazards, while pet costumes should allow animals to see, hear, breathe and move comfortably.

Nelson also recommends keeping pets indoors during trick-or-treating, providing a quiet space away from frequent visitors and making sure identification tags and microchip information are current.

She says unfamiliar costumes, loud noises and repeated doorbell rings can frighten even normally calm pets.

Owners of animals with severe anxiety are encouraged to consult their veterinarian before Halloween.
