(KNZA) — The 112th Annual Hiawatha Halloween Frolic will take place Saturday, October 31st, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1914.
The event was started by Elizabeth Krebs to give local youth something to do besides damaging her gardens.
This year’s theme is “Hiawatha’s Graveyard Gathering.”
Activities begin with the Miss Mary Children’s Costume Contest at noon at the Brown County Historical Society’s Memorial Auditorium. Registration starts at 11:00.
The traditional Kiddie Parade will begin at 3 p.m. around the Brown County Courthouse Square.
The Hiawatha Halloween Queen will be crowned at 6 p.m. on the north side of the courthouse, followed by the grand evening parade at 7.
This year’s grand marshals are the Diller family, in honor of the late Chris Diller. The family was nominated by the public and selected by members of the Hiawatha Chamber and Visitors Bureau.
The St. Joseph-based fire dancing group Pyro Flow will also perform in front of the grandstand following the evening parade.
Meanwhile, Hiawatha trick-or-treating is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, October 29th and 30th. Residents who want to welcome trick-or-treaters are encouraged to turn on their front porch lights.
