Hiawatha Police warn residents about loan scam

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Police Department is warning residents about a loan scam after two local citizens recently received threatening phone calls from individuals claiming to represent a lending company.

According to police, the callers offered loans but used high-pressure tactics to get the recipients to cooperate. In one instance, when a resident refused to comply, the caller threatened to send a doctor to their home.

Police say the callers knew the victims' addresses and phone numbers, but emphasize that these calls are scams. No legitimate lending company is going to send a doctor to someone's home.

The callers reportedly identified themselves as representatives of Advance America. However, Officer Johansen says Advance America is a legitimate loan company, and investigators suspect the individuals making these calls are not affiliated with that business.

Police advise anyone receiving a suspicious call to independently look up the legitimate company's phone number and contact the business directly to verify the caller's identity.

Residents, especially senior citizens, are also being reminded to watch for common warning signs of financial scams. These include demands to act immediately, threats or intimidation, pressure to keep financial dealings secret from family members, and requests to sign paperwork without having time to review it.

Police recommend never signing financial agreements or handing over money under pressure. Take time to review any offer and consult a trusted family member or financial professional before making a decision.

The incidents remain under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hiawatha Police Department at 785-742-2156 and ask for Officer Johansen, the case agent.

The department reminds residents: if a loan offer sounds too good to be true, or the caller uses threats and intimidation, it's a good reason to hang up.
