CMC Falls City update following cyber attack

(KTNC)-- Community Medical Center in Falls City continues to feel the effects of a cyber-attack.

The Hospital announced October 18 that the facility had been hit with a cyber attack.

In an update issued on Friday, CMC, Chief Executive Officer, Ryan Larsen said said “most services are back to nearly normal.”

Acute inpatient services, clinic, hospital lab, therapy departments and surgery are all functioning at, or close to pre-attack volumes.

Larsen noted the hospital still struggles to send images to radiologists for interpretation. Driving physical copies to be uploaded in Lincoln is too slow for emergency situations so as of Friday night, the hospital was still advising ambulances to divert to other nearby facilities.

The hospital continues to work with forensic experts to determine what might have been compromised. Security systems, Larsen noted, generally prevented penetration into the hospital's electronic health record systems, but other files may not have been so fortunate. CMC continues to investigate and will follow all state and federal reporting requirements.

CMC is not aware of any fraud or misuse that has occurred related to the incident.

It is recommended that patients and community members take cyber attacks seriously at all times.
