Fatal Halloween wreck prompts Atchison traffic safety review

(KAIR)--A fatal Atchison wreck on Halloween is prompting city officials to review traffic safety concerns along the North 12th Street corridor, including the intersection where a 45-year-old Atchison man lost his life.

The October 31 wreck claimed the life of Chad Starling, whose vehicle struck a tree after he attempted to avoid another vehicle that failed to stop at the intersection of North 12th and Kearney Streets.

During the November 2 Atchison City Commission meeting, City Manager Mark Westhoff said speed was identified as a contributing factor in the wreck and that city officials would review the intersection for possible safety improvements.

"We will take a look at it," Westhoff told commissioners. "It's an intersection where, if you look at the map, the right-of-way map is a little crooked there. It doesn't quite line up perfectly."

Westhoff noted that the steep grade along North 12th Street, visibility limitations and the configuration of the right-of-way present challenges in addressing traffic safety concerns.

City engineers previously reviewed the possibility of installing traffic mirrors along the corridor but determined they would not provide an appropriate solution.

Westhoff said city officials will review the Kansas Highway Patrol's investigation findings and consider whether additional safety measures are warranted.

Residents are also encouraged to report trees, bushes or other obstructions that interfere with visibility at intersections.
