(KLZA)-- As winter approaches, Nebraska officials are encouraging residents to prepare for snowstorms, extreme cold and hazardous road conditions. Taking steps now can help protect individuals, families and communities throughout the winter season.
Governor Jim Pillen declared Thursday, November 5, as Winter Weather Awareness Day, encouraging Nebraskans to review emergency plans and prepare for potential winter weather hazards.
The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency urges residents to update emergency kits, monitor weather forecasts and check road conditions before traveling.
Every vehicle should have a winter emergency kit containing:
Warm blankets and extra clothing
An ice scraper and snow shovel
Jumper cables and a first aid kit
A flashlight with extra batteries
A cell phone charger or power bank
Residents should customize kits to meet their household’s needs, including medications, food and water. Before traveling, check the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Nebraska 511 map for real-time traffic cameras, road conditions and snowplow tracking.
