Mary Ellen (Mullins) Overfield, 89, of Humboldt was born on May 5, 1936, in Falls City, Nebraska to Willard Albert and Louella Maud (Arnold) Mullins. She grew up in the Salem and Honey Creek area and attended Honey Creek High School graduating with the class of 1954. On June 19, 1954, Mary was united in marriage to Don Overfield at the Verdon Christian Church by Reverend Ward Merritt. The couple made their home in Salem, Falls City, Chadron, and Holbrook, Nebraska before settling in Humboldt, Nebraska.
Mary was a loving and devoted wife and mother whose purpose was to serve her Lord and family. She worked various jobs over the years that included a nurse’s aide at the Humboldt Hospital, office manager at Albright & Christiansen Auction Service, and parts person at Lewis Implement Company in Humboldt. Mary was a member of the Christian Church in Humboldt where she served the church over the years in many capacities including Elder. Mary enjoyed reading, crocheting, writing poems, finishing jigsaw puzzles and pencil coloring. Her biggest joy and love were spending time with her family and attending all their activities
Mary went to her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 1, 2026, at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska, having reached the earthly age of eighty-nine years, eleven months, and twenty-five days. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Don, daughters Donna (Overfield) Winker and Deane “DeeDee” Overfield, great-grandson Devin Hunzeker, sisters: Mildred Louise, Donna Jean, and Marjorie “Darlene”, brothers: Willard Eugene, Mark Duane, and Richard “Dick” Keith Mullins, and son-in-law Bruce Winker.
Mary is survived by her children: Debbie James and husband Danny of Humboldt, Dan Overfield and wife Cindy of Auburn, Darcy Weldon of Lincoln, 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the Christian Church in Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Howard Blecha officiating. Interment will immediately follow services at the Humboldt Cemetery. A livestream broadcast of Mary’s service will be on our Wherry Mortuary/Monument Face Book page for those not attending services.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Wherry Mortuary, 207 Nemaha Street in Humboldt. Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be given to the family’s choice with a later designation.
