Gary Lee Moulden, 90, formerly of Everest, KS, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 4, 2026, at Homestead Assisted Living in Holton, KS. He was born July 14, 1935, in Goff, KS, to Carl, Sr. and Alma (Jones) Moulden.
He graduated from Atchison County Community High School. While working in a mechanic shop, he met the love of his life, Juanita Ann Callaway. They married in Doniphan, KS, on June 13, 1953. They celebrated over 71 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on February 6, 2025.
Some might call Gary a “jack of all trades,” but he took what jobs were necessary to provide for his family in the various seasons and situations that arose. These ranged from mechanic, welder, railroad worker, firefighter, carpenter and plumber. He was also a farmer and over-the-road truck driver. A skilled woodworker and craftsman, he created beautiful pieces of furniture and gave life to Juanita’s dreams and ideas in the form of remodeling and refinishing the home they made. He may have occasionally grumbled during those projects, but he completed them, nonetheless, and moved on to the next knowing it brought her joy. Gary was known for his sense of humor and hilarious sayings that have become part of family lore. He was quick to respond with a witty one liner or sarcastic remark.
These skills and talents paled in comparison to the way he loved and served his family. When his father passed away, Gary became the patriarch of his family while he was still in his thirties. Those roles of husband, father, brother, grandfather, great and great-great grandfather, friend and neighbor are what he will be most fondly remembered for. Gary never hesitated to drop what he was doing to help someone in need. Just the week prior to his death, he could be found driving to pick up someone whose vehicle broke down.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita; son, Gary Joe Moulden; parents, Carl, Sr. and Alma; brothers Cecil “Cork” Moulden, Carl “Dale” Moulden, Jr., Bruce Moulden; and great-grandson Colton St. John.
He is survived by his daughters Gayla (Tim) Self of Muscotah, KS, Glenda Latzke of Pleasant Hill, MO; granddaughter Ginny Moulden of Leavenworth, KS; 7 grandsons Gary Lee (Lora) Moulden of Windsor, MO, Graham (Dina) Moulden of Topeka, KS, Garth (Valerie) Moulden of Muscotah, KS, Grant (Rebecca) Moulden of Holton, KS, Brant (Libby) Self of Parker, KS, Travis (Hannah) Self of Soldier, KS, Asa (Amy) Vandeloo of Baldwin City, KS; brother Mark (Vickie) Moulden of Topeka, KS; sister Joy Griffin of Rushville, MO; 23 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place with Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, KS, handling the arrangements. Private interment at Muscotah Cemetery in Muscotah, KS, will occur at a later date. Memorials may be made to Faith Home Health and Hospice in care of the mortuary.
