Alma Irene Mach, 95, of Pawnee City, Nebraska, passed away with family by her side at the Pawnee County Memorial Hospital, on May 31, 2026. She was born on October 31, 1930, to Steven and Matilda (Horalek) Stastny in Pawnee City, Nebraska.
She attended North Star District 70 rural school through the eighth grade. She attended Pawnee City High School and graduated in 1948.
Alma married Otto Mach on January 22, 1950. To this union one son was born, LaWayne. They lived with Otto’s dad, Joe Mach, for twenty-two years.
Alma and her husband farmed and ran a small dairy southeast of Pawnee City. After graduating from high school, LaWayne continued farming and dairying with his parents until their retirement in the 1980’s.
Otto and Alma enjoyed spending winters in Yuma, Arizona in the 1980’s, and winters in Pharr, Texas in the 1990’s. They enjoyed boating, water skiing, flying, and square and round dancing. From 1950 to 1955 they enjoyed playing in the Steven Stastny family orchestra. In her later years, Alma continued to enjoy going to polka festivals and dances with her sisters and family.
Alma was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church in Pawnee City, Nebraska, and later became a member of the United Methodist Church in Pawnee City. Alma was a member of the Eastern Star Guild Chapter #16 in Pawnee City, and later became a member of the Humboldt Eastern Star Guild Chapter #234. She was a member of the ZCBJ Lodge #101, Dubois, Nebraska, and other organizations. Alma enjoyed cooking, baking cookies, and sewing.
Alma moved to Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska in May, 2022. She was lovingly cared for there and enjoyed participating in all of the activities.
Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Otto, her son, LaWayne, her parents, Steven and Matilda Stastny, sister and brother-in-law Betty and Henry Stauffer, sister Elsie Tomek, brother-in-law Roy Wittwer, and nephews Jack Stauffer, Doug Wittwer, and Don Mach.
She is survived by her sister, Edna Wittwer of Sabetha, Kansas, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at the Bohemian National Cemetery, southwest of Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Lauri Beach officiating.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at the Wherry Mortuary in Pawnee City, Nebraska.
