William Eugene “Gene” Rice, 96, of Hiawatha, died at the Sabetha Manor, June 13, 2026.
He was born July 23, 1929, in Horton, the son of Oliver and Beulah Steward Rice. He spent his youth in Muscotah, KS and Effingham where he graduated from ACCHS in 1949. In 1950, William served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was discharged honorably two years later at Fort Hood, Texas.
Gene, as he was known to family and friends, worked at several jobs before joining the Wilde Tool Co. in Hiawatha. He retired in 1994 after 36 years of service.
Gene wed Doris E Jackson on May 9, 1963, and they made their home in Hiawatha since then.
Gene was Sunday School Superintendent for many years at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Old Fairview, where he also served as Elder.
Preceding Gene in death were his parents, step daughter Cindy Hall, nephew Billy Simpson, sister Ruth Rice Simpson and her husband William, including aunts and uncles.
Survivors include his wife Doris of the home; step-daughter Vicki Garrison of Hiawatha; six step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of Gene’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2026, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, with Pastor Rich Lehmkuhl officiating. Interment will follow at Muscotah Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.
