Marietta Joyce Gilkison Kout of Hiawatha, Kansas died June 23, 2026 at the age of 90.
Marietta was born July 16, 1935 to Arthur James Gilkison and Louise Ebbrecht Gilkison. She was the second of nine children born in Cummings Kansas. Marietta grew up east of Horton and attended Atchison County Community High School graduating with the class of 1954.
On October 1, 1954 she married Walter Samuel Kout, of this marriage three children were born: Irene, Sharon, and Michael. Marietta and Walter were High School sweethearts they lived several years in Nevada and Arkansas prior to returning to Kansas. Mary loved to host the family by feeding everyone. Mary was Patient Account Manager at the Atchison Hospital and worked at several other hospitals in the area.
Mary and Walter enjoyed traveling and enjoyed their retirement years at their home in South Texas. Walter passed away in September of 2014 after 60 years of marriage.
Survivors include; Irene Covert (Dalton deceased) Sharon Miller (Phil Kelsay) Michael Kout (deceased) and (Carol Kout); three grandchildren: Kyle (Emma) Miller, Sierra Stortz (Brandon) Macaila Wykoff (Dalton); two great grandchildren Isabelle and Harrison Stortz. Isabella Rose is due in August. Other survivors include Mary’s sisters: Wanda Nelson and Barbara Chase, both of Arizona.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Richard Gilkison (Susan), Thomas Gilikson; sisters; Sarah Clark, Crystal Barnett, Faith Smith, Jackie McConnell; a son Michael; and son-in-law Dalton Covert.
Mary’s wish was to be cremated and to have a visitation at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, Kansas, at 3-5 p.m. Friday, July 10, 2026.
