Mary Lois Evans Kibler, 102, passed away Friday, in Highland, Kansas.
Mary (or Mary Lois in her younger years) was born on April 28, 1924 in Converse, Missouri to James and Frances (Creamer) Evans. She attended a one room schoolhouse and sometimes rode her horse to school. She graduated from Lathrop High School in 1941 and Park College in 1946. She enjoyed all of her education and valued education and lifelong learning.
Following her senior year, she accompanied her roommate home to the territory of Alaska. She ran the Metlakatla post office during her summer there. This was the beginning of her love of travel. She visited all 50 states and traveled to 5 continents.
In the fall of 1946, she moved to Troy Kansas to begin her teaching career as the home economics teacher at Troy High School. In Troy she met Robert Larson Kibler whom she married in June of 1949. After living in Miami and Nemaha Counties, the couple moved to Hiawatha for 34 years. In Hiawatha, she was an active member of Sorosis and of the First Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
In 1989, Mary and Bob returned to Troy, KS where she lived for 37 years.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents, brother Dale Evans, sister Eunice Kirk, brother-in-law David Kirk and son-in-law William Sciortino. She is survived by daughters Susan Staley (Ronny), Amy Sciortino, and Caroline Kibler (Calan Thurow); nephews Bob Aufenkamp, Dale, and Bryce Kirk; grandchildren Byron Anderson (Mary), Sam Anderson (Haylie), Emily Unger (Bobby) and Madeline Sciortino (Clay Schaeffer) and great grandchildren Gracie, Bronson, Colt, Sammie and Brylee.
Funeral Service will be Sunday, July 5th, 2026, at 3pm at Harman-Rohde Funeral Home in Troy, KS.
Visitation will be at 2 pm; burial at Mt. Olive Cemetery Troy, KS. Friends may call after 11:00 A.M. Sunday.
The family suggests memorials to The Doniphan County Library Dist. #1, the Mount Olive Cemetery, or the Troy Fire Department.
