Nancy Kay McClain, 81, of Horton, Kansas, went home to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her beloved family on Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.
Nancy had courageously battled several chronic illnesses for many years. She was born on January 11, 1945, in Horton, Kansas the daughter of Roy E. and Hazel Pearl (Banning) Hill. Nancy graduated from Horton High School in 1963 and then went to the St. Lukes School of Nursing. She worked in the healthcare field in various areas of nursing at the Hiawatha Infirmary, Hiawatha Hospital and 40 years at the Horton Hospital. She was dedicated to taking care of others.
On January 3, 1965, she married John McClain at the First Baptist Church in Horton, Kansas. Nancy dearly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. "She loved having family gatherings and cooking for them and was known for her potato salad and homemade white cake. Nancy was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. In recent years she enjoyed having breakfast at the Everest Cafe and the Dinnerbell Cafe in Wetmore.
She is survived by the love of her life for 61 years, John McClain of the home, her children, Scott (Sara) McClain of Manhattan, Kansas, Sherri (Jeff) Oxley of Rantoul, Kansas, Travis McClain of Hiawatha, Kansas, Shelly (Tim) Buser of Horton, Kansas. Grandchildren, Login (Kyle), Emma, Connor, Landon, Mitchell, Noah, Calyssa, and Katy. Great Grandchildren, Kayden and Asher.
She was preceded in death by parents, son, John Mark McClain and a granddaughter, Abbie Lea McClain.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at the First Baptist Church in Horton, Kansas. The family will greet family and friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. Burial will be at the Horton City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Nancy McClain memorial fund to be designated later and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
