Betty M. Chick passed away on September 11th, 2026, at the age of 89, in Salina, KS. She was born to Lambert Larson and Ruth (Ellingson) Larson Cummings on February 24th, 1937, south of Horton, KS, on her grandparents’ (John and Veva Ellingson’s) farm.
Betty went to Horton Elementary and the County School near Denton, KS, prior to graduating from Willis High School (Willis, KS) in 1955. Following graduation, she worked as a switchboard operator for the Horton Telephone Company.
On August 21, 1955, Betty married Duane E. Chick on her grandparents’ new farm north of Lancaster, KS. They shared 69 years together prior to Duane’s passing in 2024.
After marriage, Duane and Betty lived together on their own farm in Whiting, KS, where they lovingly raised their daughter, Cheryl. On their farm, Betty’s love for gardening bloomed. She enjoyed canning vegetables and preserves, but even more so, she enjoyed sharing her harvest with others.
She was a gifted baker and loved treating her grandchildren with her baked goods, most notably, her banana bread.
Betty served her community as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Lions Club.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, parents, and brother-in-law Jack Willis.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Dr. Michael) Meier of Salina, KS; grandchildren, Dr. Leah (Jacob) Peterson of Salina and Dr. Isaac (Theresa) Meier of Lincoln, NE; great-grandchildren, August and Vivienne Peterson, Maxwell and Margaret Meier; and her sister Zelma Willis of Sabetha, KS.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, KS, where the family will greet friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time.
Burial will follow at the Horton City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Whiting Fire Department and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
