Shirley Ann Hammes, 76, passed away surrounded by the love of her family on Friday, October 23rd. She was born on July 16, 1950, to Ben and Rose Glissman.
Shirley graduated from Kelly High School in 1968. Following graduation, she attended cosmetology school and began her career as a hairdresser at the salon her father had purchased for her. Shirley and Dan later partnered with her sister and brother-in-law to operate Freddy’s Pizza for nine years. Throughout her lifetime, she remained involved in the family trucking business, which continued to be an important part of her life.
On November 7, 1970, Shirley married Daniel Hammes. Together, they built a family and were blessed with three children: Jason (Jill) Hammes and Brad (Amy) Hammes, both of Seneca, Kansas, and Traci (Vern) of Rossville, Kansas.
Above all else, Shirley’s greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother. Nothing meant more to her than spending time with her family, especially gathering around the table, playing cards, sharing stories, visiting, and enjoying one another’s company. These simple moments together were among her most treasured blessings.
Shirley also cherished her siblings and the extraordinary bond they shared. They were always finding reasons to get together, and their close-knit relationship was a beautiful reflection of the love they had for one another. Family was at the center of Shirley’s life, and her deep faith was an equally important part of who she was. She leaves behind a legacy of love, togetherness, faith, and devotion to those closest to her.
Shirley was a Girl Scout leader, worked in the school as a paraprofessional, and was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the St. Ann’s Altar Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel; her parents, Ben and Rose Glissman; her parents-in-law, Gene and Eleanor Hammes; and her brothers-in-law, Clarence Meyer, Dan Haverkamp, and Larry Grose.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter, beloved siblings Jo Ann Meyer, Mary Ellen (Rex) Russell, Richard (Bernie) Glissman, Connie Haverkamp, Ron (Joan) Glissman, Joyce Grose, and Myra (Dave) Haverkamp and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who will cherish her memory.
The rosaries will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 2 &7 P.M., at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 at 11:00 A.M., at Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. The burial will be in the church cemetery next to her husband Dan.
