Jon Christian “Chris” Willis, 56, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
Chris was born during a December snowstorm in 1969 in Winchester, Kansas, to Terry and Esther (Ellerman) Willis. He grew up in Effingham, Kansas, and graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1988.
A proud graduate of Kansas State University, Chris earned degrees in Criminal Justice and Sociology, laying the foundation for a life dedicated to serving and protecting others.
Chris proudly served as a police officer with the Atchison Police Department for over 20 years. For Chris, being a police officer was more than a career; it was a calling rooted in his desire to make a difference in others' lives and see justice served where it was deserved.
Although an injury led to his early retirement from the police department, Chris's dedication to protecting others never wavered. He continued his service as a member of the security team at Benedictine College, where he helped ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff. His years of service reflected a steadfast commitment to the community he called home.
Outside of his professional life, Chris enjoyed hunting and shooting, pursuits that reflected his love of the outdoors. One of his greatest pleasures was watching his son, Jon Archer, compete as a wrestler. Those moments let Chris enjoy what he loved and spend time with those who meant the most to him.
Chris is survived by his son, Jon Archer Willis; his daughter, Jenna Willis; his parents, Terry and Esther Willis; his sister, Sherry (Karl) Richards; his nieces, Kendall and Nicole; and his nephews, Gabe and Braden. Most notably his youngest nephew Ben Beene, who was practically a second son to Chris.
Chris's unexpected passing leaves a tremendous void in the lives of his family, friends, fellow officers, colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched. All who knew him will remember his legacy of service, dedication, and commitment to others. Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will be held at the Nortonville Cemetery, Nortonville, KS. Memorials are suggested to Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church or Tunnels to Towers and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Words of comfort may be left at www.beckerdyer.com.
