Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) Essay Contest
Every year the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) presents
an essay-writing contest based on historical events. The Falls City 5th
and 6th th grade teachers who teach social studies encourage their
students to participate in this writing competition sponsored locally by
the Reavis-Ashley Chapter of the D.A.R.. This year marked the 100 th
anniversary of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in
Washington, D.C. The students wrote essays on the following prompt:
That you had a brother who lost his life on the battlefields of France
during World War 1. You and your family attended the dedication of
the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on November 11, 1921. Describe
what this meant to you and your family.
The local 5 th grade 1 st place winner was Carolyn Powell. Carolyn was also
the 1 st place winner at the state level. The 2nd place winner was Colin
Roberts, and the 3 rd place winner was Gracie Gill. The 6 th grade 1 st place
winner was Kenley Alexander, 2 nd place winner was Madalynn Hawley,
and 3 rd place winner was Elijah Leyden.
First place local winners were sent to the state level and if they won
there, their essays compete at the regional level. Those that win at the
regional level are entered in the national essay contest.
This year the 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd place winners of the local essay contest
were honored at a reception at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 20 th Towle
St. on April 9 th . The students read their essays to their families and the
Reavis-Ashley members. Refreshments were served by the Reavis-
Ashley Chapter.
