Sabetha Run

Mild Temps and a Good Crowd Welcome 2023
As 2022 came to a close, a group of 34 participants (plus one canine) came from far and wide to get the jump on their 2023 resolutions and goals by taking part in the 46-year-old tradition of the Sabetha New Years Eve Midnight Run. At the stroke of midnight -- or at least a few moments after taking the annual obligatory "Bank Sign" photo -- the group took to the streets to run and walk approximately 2 miles from the United Bank Sign to the High School Flagpole and back under mild, 39degF conditions.
Those participating this year included: Santiago Alvarez V, Macarena Munoz, Isabel Munoz, Osvaldo Munoz, Robin Stapleton, Shannon Stapleton, Arturo Papa Sr., Ana Silva, Arturo Papa, Alvaro Papa Silva, Lauren Risetter, Isabelle Walker, Brandon Walker, Gwendolyn Walker, James Johnson (and Simba, "Cop Dog"), Sue Schuette, Karrington Payne, Laurel Smith, Abram Schuetz, Jeanne Edelman, Deborah Edelman, Laura Edelman, Loren Edelman, Cornelia Aberle, John Aberle, Kurt Mueller, Naomi Pearson, Lily Pearson, Martha Pearson, Shaun Pearson, Jenny Brinkmeyer, Sue Plattner, and Broc Plattner.
The Sabetha New Years Eve Midnight Run was started on December 31, 1977 by Rich and Marlene Ayers (Kansas City), Ron and Linda Strader (Holton), and Sam and Phyllis Cook (Duluth, MN). According to Rich's log, the first run was "10 degrees and icy with strong north winds." The event takes place each year on New Year's Eve, and all are invited, though few accept that invitation.
Next year: Same time, same place. See you there.
