Raymond L. Blomfield

Raymond L. Blomfield, 83, of Hiawatha, died Tuesday evening, March 13, 2012, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha where he had been a resident since May.

Ray was born July 13, 1928, at Gaylord, Kansas, to Ernest and Lilly Spin Wolf.  When Ray was a toddler, he was taken in and was raised by Verdon and Hulda Wolf Blomfield.  He grew up in the Gaylord-Kirwin area where he attended schools, later graduating from Kirwin High School.  After high school, he attended a trade school for two years and studied carpentry/construction.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, discharged at the rank of corporal in 1952.   Ray spent his working life as a carpenter/handyman with his business known as “Ray’s Remodeling”, which he operated until retiring in 2006.  No job being too big or small with great pride taken in his workmanship.

Mr. Blomfield was of the Methodist faith.  He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed card playing, cooking, fishing, gardening, hunting, puzzles (word search) watching  high school/college baseball and basketball high school, traveling, visiting with family and friends.

He was married to Mary Maxine Hartman in 1950 until they divorced in 1959.  He married Helen Heinrich January 13, 1965 at Garden City, Kansas.  She preceded him in death in 1972.  He has been a companion to Lela McCray in Hiawatha for over 30 years.  She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters:  Sally Ruff of El Dorado, Arkansas, Patricia (Robert) Brown of Cabot, Arkansas; three sisters: Marion Freeman of Smith Center, Kansas, Edna Maley of Superior, Nebraska, and Natalli Karl, also of Smith Center; and three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a half brother Robert Wolf; and a half sister Ruth Post.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 10 a.m. until 4:30 Friday.  The family will meet with friends from 6 until 7 that evening, at First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha.  Funeral services are planned to follow at 7 p.m., with Reverend Randy Quinn officiating.  Graveside services and military honors are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Gaylord Cemetery, near Smith Center, Kansas.
