Pat Hegarty

Pat Hegarty, 66, of Atchison, KS passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO.  Pat was born August 15, 1948 to Patrick L Hegarty and Lillian (Hampl) Hegarty in Atchison, Kansas.  


Pat attended Spring Grove Grade School in Doniphan County.  Pat attended Troy High School.  On February 17, 1973 Pat married Julie (Franken) Hegarty. She preceded him in death January 22, 2009.
Over the years, Pat enjoyed working on the family farm and developed a great sense of work ethic.  After high school, Pat went to work for Midwest Grain Products. In 1984, he began a 23 year career delivering newspapers for the St. Joesph Newspress and then later the Kansas City Star.  He prided himself in providing great customer service.   


Pat was an avid sports enthusiast whether a participant or a spectator.  Pat had many hobbies such as watching KU Basketball and the Kansas City Royals.  He also enjoyed playing pitch with friends, coaching and playing softball, as well as shooting pool.  Pat attended several NAIA tournaments over the years.  Pat also enjoyed going to the casinos.  Pat never met a stranger.  Pat’s greatest gifts were being a storyteller and his quick wit.  


Pat is survived by his three children  Kelli (Michael) of Topeka, Patrick of Atchison, and Katie Hegarty, of Topeka; three granddaughters Malia, Amiya, and Taylen Thurman of Topeka.  Pat is also survived by his siblings Mike (Terri) Hegarty, Vic Hegarty, Sheila (Larry) Boos, Mary (Joe) Perkins, and Tim (Teresa) Hegarty as well as a special friend Pat Hetz.  Pat is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  
In addition to his wife, Pat was preceded in death by his parents.


A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Pat’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2014 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 1001 N 2nd St, Atchison, KS. Burial will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Atchison.  The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the church.
