Julian Schmitz, 76, Axtell, died Thursday, April 30, 2015 at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., May 3, at Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home, Axtell.

A Rosary service is 7 p.m., Sunday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Axtell.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m., Monday, May 4 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Fr. Albert Hauser officiating.

Burial is in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.

Julian was born on April 23, 1939 at rural Baileyville to Paul and MaryAnn (Bergman) Schmitz. On June 5, 1965, he was united in marriage to Virginia Mason at St. Malacy’s Catholic Church, Beattie. Julian was a farmer and lived north of Axtell near the St. Bridget area for 40 years.

Julian served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and served on the water district board.

He loved all sporting events, track, soccer, baseball, and football. Julian liked tractor-pulling, pick-up pulling and deer hunting. He enjoyed playing cards with friends and family.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and brothers, Kenny, Benny and Donnie Schmitz.

Survivors include his wife Virginia; children, Julie (Gerald) Koch, Baileyville, Joyce Parli, Cle Elum, WA, Thomas (Tracy) Schmitz, Mulvane, Vicki Schmitz, Galva, Doug (Beth) Schmitz, Salina, David (Valerie) Schmitz, Axtell, Daniel (Carrie) Schmitz, Beattie, Andrew Schmitz, Wamego; twenty-five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Siblings, Marita (Glynn) Gallagher, Kansas City, MO, Regis (Mary Jane) Schmitz, Baileyville, Roseanne (Don) Mitchell, Topeka, Evelyn (Larry) Heinen, Seneca, Edna (John) Kuhlman, Tecumseh, KS, Cyril (Joyce) Schmitz, Baileyville, Gilbert (Deb) Schmitz, Baileyville and Kathy (Dan) Heinen, Seneca.

A memorial fund is established and the family will designate later. Contributions may be sent in care of Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home, Axtell.
