Helen Elizabeth Coffelt, 96 of Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Everest, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at the Homestead Assisted Living Center in Topeka, Kansas. She was born on September 20, 1918 in Everest, Kansas the daughter of Bruce and Arline Dodge Lanter. Helen graduated from Everest High School in 1936. After high school she went to work for the Union State Bank in Everest. On September 20, 1941 she married Raymond C. Coffelt at her parents home in Everest, Kansas. Helen and Raymond made their home in Hillsboro, Kansas where Helen worked for Groening Clothiers until her retirement. She was a longtime member of the Everest Christian Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary #5210 in Hiawatha, Kansas, American Legion Auxiliary in Hillsboro, Kansas, 50 year member of the Order Of The Eastern Star, Wathena Chapter 413, Past member of the Mentor Study Club in Hillsboro, Kansas. Helen enjoyed flowers, doing needlework, and traveling. In 1974 she was the overall winner in display of arts and crafts at the Kansas Federation of Women's Clubs Fourth District Convention in Hillsboro, Kansas. After Helen and Raymond retired they moved to Hiawatha, Kansas. When Raymond passed away on March 23, 2008, Helen decided to move to Topeka, Kansas to be closer to her family. Survivors include a daughter, Janet (Jim) Shaw of Topeka, Kansas; son, R.C. Coffelt of Tulsa, Oklahoma; sister, Ruth Smith of Everest, Kansas; brother, Richard Lanter of Horton, Kansas; three grandchildren, Debbie (John) Jones, Christy (Eddie) Tomanek and Christopher Coffelt; three great grandchildren, Trevor Tomanek, Kailani Jones and William Jackson Coffelt. She was also preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Robert, Donald, Lloyd and Roy Lanter. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, September 14, 2015 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:30 P.M. Burial will be at the Horton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Everest Christian Church or the Grace Hospice both may be sent in care of the mortuary.
