Engelbert Nicholas Heuertz, 98, Valley Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015, at Midland Care Linnwood Park Assisted Living at Valley Falls.

He was born Aug. 20, 1917, at Juniata, NE, the son of Mathias and Susan Konen Heuertz. He moved to Valley Falls in 1921,  graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1937.

Engelbert was a dairyman and farmed southwest of Valley Falls. He had worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Topeka for 28 years.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Valley Falls. He had attended the church for 94 years and had been the choir director. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 6671 and had volunteered at God’s Storehouse in Meriden for ten years. He was a member of Jefferson County Farm Bureau and Valley Falls Historical Society.

Engelbert married Dorothy Josephine Deeken, April 15, 1941, at Wathena. She died June 6, 1995. He was also preceded in death by eight brothers, Joseph, Anthony, Benedict, George, Peter, Edward, Adolph and Matthew Heuertz.

Survivors include four sons, Robert (Bonnie) Heuertz, Valley Falls, Roger Heuertz, San Angelo, TX, Richard Heuertz, Phoenix, AZ, and Ken (Melinda) Heuertz, Manhattan; two daughters, Carol (Dave) Christensen, Garden City, and Linda Heuertz, and her husband, Ken Clatterbaugh, Port Townsend, WA; a sister, Julia Theis, Penryn, CA; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Engelbert was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was loved by everyone who knew him.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Valley Falls. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery. A Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls, followed by a visitation.
