Ruth Ilene Smith (December 19, 1925 - November 20, 2015) Ruth Ilene Smith, 89, of Whiting, Kansas, passed away on Friday, November 20, 2015 at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, Kansas. She was born on December 19, 1925 in Atchison County, Kansas the daughter of William and Elsie Chain Lockwood. Ruth worked as a bookkeeper for Duckwalls, sold Avon products, wrote the Whiting news for the area newspapers and helped her husband on the family farm. She was a member of the Whiting United Methodist Church, Netawaka Saddle club and was a former 4-H leader. Ruth loved flowers, gardening, cooking, sewing and playing scrabble with her grandchildren. On January 19, 1947 she married Warren Smith in Holton, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 2, 2009. Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Mike) Schaefer of Topeka, Kansas and Rhonda (Bruce) Cormier of Soldier, Kansas; two sons, Stanley (Di) Smith of Red Oak, Iowa and Dennis (Pam) Smith of Whiting, Kansas; sister, Helen Diebolt of Atchison, Kansas; ten grandchildren and twenty seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.
