Roy E. Jones, 86, of Hiawatha, with his family by his side, went to be with Jesus, Saturday morning, January 9, 2016, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital. Roy was born at Sabetha, August 15, 1929, one of two sons born to Arleigh and Olwen Walters Jones, and was a lifelong resident of the Brown County area. He was a 1947 graduate of Hiawatha High School and served 10 years with the 2nd BN, 130th FA, Kansas National Guard, Hiawatha, discharged at the rank of staff sergeant. Roy worked a short time at Texaco service station prior to starting as a meter reader for then Kansas Power & Light. He later was a lineman, foreman, retiring as a general manager after 40 years of service. He was a dedicated member of the Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church in Hiawatha. Roy was an active member of Gideon’s International in Hiawatha for many years; and since 1950, a member of IBEW. To say Roy enjoyed hunting & fishing, would be a great understatement! He married Dorothy Gordon, June 11, 1950, at Zion United Methodist Church, northeast of Robinson. She died November 11, 1999. He married Mary Korthanke January 5, 2001 at the Calvary Temple in Hiawatha. She survives of the home. Also surviving are a son Steven Jones (Andrea) of rural Hiawatha; two daughters: Jannifer Mix (Michael) of Osage Beach, MO, Barbara Rettele (Dennis) of Wetmore; step-daughter Pamela Scott (Corey) of Everest; 7 grandchildren: Regina Bicknell, Ben Rettele, Casey McNulty, Shannon Blijlevens, Megan Thompson, Jereme Jones, Joshua Jones; two step-grandchildren Haley Scott, Patrick Scott; great grandchildren: Olivia, Delaney, Jillian, Collier Bicknell; Avery & Layton Rettele, Nathaniel & Jaidyn McNulty; and Estella Blijlevens. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, and stillborn brother Arleigh Jones, Jr., in 1927; two granddaughters: Valissa Rettele, and Jill Rettele. A Celebration of Roy’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, at the Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church in Hiawatha, with Pastors Jim Farris and Don Goatley officiating. Interment will follow at the Hiawatha Cemetery. Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Monday. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services at Church.
