HOLTON- Signa Coreen Mahaffey AKA Signa K. Mahaffey affectionately known as "Grammy", formerly of Holton, died Thursday, May 10, 2012, at home in Colorado Springs, Colorado surrounded by her family and loved ones. Her daughter, Kristi Mahaffey Fontenot and her husband Steve Fontenot, 14 grandchildren, Josh, Jenn, Joel, Jesse, Jon, Jordan, Jared, Ericka Joy, J Austin, Julee, Jensyn, Brad, Christie, John Claude, plus 11 great grandchildren, Charis, Kalyn, Faith, Josh, Pepper Kay, Noah, Clara, Claude, Kaitlyn, Mikayla, Caleb, and her brother, Larry Fortner and his wife Zelda of Mesa, Arizona, survive her with grateful acknowledgment of her selfless contribution to their faith and lives. Signa was born in McPherson County, Kansas on June 1, 1915, the daughter of Harvey S. and Jennie Ferne (Sellers) Fortner. She grew up in Galva, Kansas where she initially met and then married Leland Mahaffey on March 22, 1935. Lee’s work took them to Galva, Illinois where they lived and worked on his family farm for several years before moving to Americus, Kansas. They eventually moved from Americas to Holton and purchased a farm west of town. They became involved in the community where they celebrated the birth of their daughter, Kristi Lee Mahaffey. In 1955, they purchased a home in Holton and moved to town. In1957, Lee and Signa began their floral design business, Lee’s Flower & Gift Shop. Signa was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Leland Mahaffey in 1976. Signa continued to run her floral business till she sold Lee’s Flower & Gift Shop in 1987. She then moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma to be near her daughter and grandchildren. In 1995, Signa moved with the family to Colorado Springs, Colorado where she worked with Kristi in her wedding planning/floral business. Signa cared for her grandchildren while Kristi taught school during the day and worked other jobs at night and on weekends to support the family. The time Signa spent with all of the grandchildren has significantly impacted each and every one of their lives. The love and care Signa invested in her grandchildren from birth through young adulthood has come full circle in reciprocating their love and care for their grandmother. Signa was a 13 year resident of Colorado Springs and a 4 year resident of Mesa, Arizona.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Evangel United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Holton Cemetery. Family will greet friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, from 6:00 PM–8:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the "Realm of Caring", an alternative form of cancer treatment and severe forms of epilepsy
