Dr. John Stone, 91 passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the Sabetha Community Hospital.

He was born on January 12, 1924 in Hiawatha, Kansas the son of William H. Stone and Grace (O’Neil) Stone.  He attended grade school and high school in Hiawatha and went on to graduate from UMKC Dental School in 1947.  While in dental school he met his future bride, and later married Edith Barnby on August 24, 1946. She preceded him in death on October 22, 1993. 

Dr. Stone was stationed in Korea during the Korean War at the division HDQS and upon returning to the states, practiced dentistry in Sabetha for over 40 years before his retirement in August of 1990.  John was an avid bird hunter and fisherman and enjoyed many years hunting with his dogs.  In addition he enjoyed doing Bonsai, woodworking, making jewelry, as well as other metal working.

Dr. Stone is survived by his daughter, Susan (Rich) Kummer of San Marcos, California; son, Thomas (Pam) of Mechanicsburg, Illinois; grandsons, Heath Stone of Brighton, Colorado and Tyrel Stone of Dickenson, North Dakota; granddaughter, Shelby (Sam) O’Keefe of Rolla, Missouri; step grandson, Steven (Tricia) Kummer and step granddaughters, Kristine McMahan, and Sherri Frey of Omaha, Nebraska, several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest son, John.

Graveside service with be Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sabetha Cemetery.  Visitation will be Friday, January 22, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Popkess Funeral Home in Sabetha.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Sabetha Community Hospital sent in care of Popkess Mortuary 823 Virginia Sabetha, Kansas  66534.  www.popkessmortuaries.com
