Marvin A. “Barney” Barnhart

Marvin A. “Barney” Barnhart, 80, formerly of Powhattan, died unexpectedly Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at his home in Douglass, KS.

Marvin was born at Livingston, Montana, November 3, 1935, one of seven children born to the late William Lyman Barnhart and Marguerite May Davis Barnhart.  He grew up at Livingston where he attended and graduated high school.  Barney served in the US Army for 10 years before transferring to the US Air Force, where he served another 10 years before retiring as a staff sergeant.  While in the service, he served during the Korean War.  After retiring from the military, he worked as an electrician for BNSF railroad, working on the locomotives, before final retirement.

Barney was a member of the First Baptist Church of Douglass, KS; BPOE #1741, Hiawatha Elks Lodge; and of Masonic Lodge #35, AF&AM, also of Hiawatha.

He met Donna Grossner in 1973 on line who was from Brown County.  They married in the fall, November 6, 1973, at Miami, OK.  They lived in various places in the Midwest and Montana, due to his being relocated with the railroad, before the family settled in Powhattan in 1995.  He and Donna moved to Rose Hill, KS in 2012 to be near family.  She survives.

Other survivors include three sons:   Tobey Barnhart (Michelle) of Rose Hill, Chris Barnhart (Tiffany) of Valley Center, Jeff Barnhart (Robin) of Douglass; two daughters:  Patricia Barnhart and Kimberly Barnhart, both of Rose Hill; a brother Bob Barnhart of Laurel, Montana; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.

Marvin was also preceded in death by four brothers:  Bill, Jr., Jim, Ed, Dick; a sister Jeanie; and grandson Dustin Barnhart.

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 26, at the Eternal Hope Worship Center on East Iowa Street in Hiawatha, with Pastor Rich Lehmkuhl officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Claytonville Cemetery, south of Hiawatha. 

The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Tuesday at the Church.  Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home.
