Evelyn Ernestine Waters, 92, of Hastings, Nebraska, formerly of Seneca, Kansas, died Monday, February 29, 2016 at Perkins Pavilion in Hastings. Evelyn was born on farm north of St. Benedict on May 8, 1923 to Frank and Lena Bergman Melcher. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School. Evelyn attended Stewart’s Beauty Academy in Topeka, Kansas and then returned home, where she eventually established Evelyn’s Beauty Shop in her home. Evelyn married Bob Waters on November 27, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas. Theirs was the first wedding where the church allowed photographs to be taken inside. They were married for 64 years before Bob died in 2013. For many years, Evelyn was a member of the Seneca Women’s Federated Business Club and the Nemaha County Historical Society. St Ann’s Altar Society of the church. She wrote history of St. Mary’s School She was very interested in current events, family history, and her proudest accomplishments were her children. Evelyn is survived by her children, Jane (Chris) Mudd of Oklahoma City, Susan (Mike) Uridil of Hastings, and Mike (Connie) Waters of Colorado Springs, nine grandchildren, Andrew, Annie and Matt Mudd, Chris and John Uridil, Molly Uridil Engelhardt, and Alex and Greg Waters; and nine great-grandchildren: Caden, Witten, Colton and Polly Mudd, Creighton, Jack and Loren Uridil, Hannah Engelhardt and Evie Uridil, a sister LaVon Strathman of Juda, Wisconsin and a brother Elmer Melcher of Seneca. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sisters, Melita Haverkamp on July 2, 2004 and Lucille Wichman on January 21, 2013 and brothers Vern Melcher on March 11, 1976 and Francis Melcher on July 3, 2006. She was also preceded in death by an infant sister in 1910, and infant twin’s brother and sister in 1914, and an infant brother in 1918. Evelyn was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, Kansas. A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m., March 6th at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m., March 7th at Sts. Peter and Paul church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given for St. Peter and Paul Church in Seneca or Mary Lanning Hospice in Hastings.
