H. Wayne Shirley
Dishon-Maple Chaney Mortuary in Horton

H. Wayne Shirley, 86, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at the Maple Heights Nursing Center in Hiawatha, Kansas. He was born on March 8, 1930 in Norton, Kansas the son of Fred and Lillian (Rumsey) Shirley. Wayne served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After returning home, he became a farmer and stockman, which he dearly loved. He was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church, Powhattan American Legion, served on the Powhattan #510 School board and the Brown County Coop board for years. On December 27, 1951 he married Laura Lee Stueve at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Axtell, Kansas. She preceded him in death on December 29, 2005. Survivors include three sons, Michael (Judy) Shirley, Joseph (Dee) Shirley and Terrance Shirley all of Horton, Kansas; four daughters, Susan (Erich) Siegmann of Degmarn, Germany, Arlene (Larry) Wessel of Frankfort, Kansas, Connie (Todd) Olson of Shawnee, Kansas and Nancy (Aaron) Seacat of Olathe, Kansas; brother, Loyal Shirley of Vermillion, Kansas; two sisters, Bernice DeNeve of Houston, Texas and Doris Campbell of Wichita, Kansas; fifteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Roy, Kenneth and Robert Shirley; two sisters Helen Kirk and Dorothy Shirley. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, March 18, 2016 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. A prayer service will be recited at 6:30 P.M. on Thursday evening at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends following the prayer service. Burial will be at the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Mercier, Kansas. Memorials may be made to the St. Peter's Cemetery fund and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
