Raymond Chester Clifton

Raymond Chester Clifton, 91, of Tecumseh, Nebraska, passed away April 1, 2016 in Tecumseh, Nebraska.  He was born March 28, 1925 to Chester John and Ruth Irene (Peabody) Clifton.  He grew up near Nemaha, Nebraska and Rock Port, Missouri.  

He was united in marriage to Mercedes E. Kramer on December 29, 1950 in Nebraska City, NE.  To this marriage five children were born.

Raymond was a Korean War veteran, serving his country from Jan. 18, 1951 to his honorable discharge on Oct. 17, 1952.

He was a life-long farmer, beginning at the age of 12 farming with a team of horses.  Raymond also enjoyed raising cattle, hogs, horses, and many other animals on the farm.  At different times throughout his life, he was an usher at St. John’s Lutheran Church, a member of a bowling league, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and actively supported his children with 4-H projects, baseball, and the Johnson County Rough Riders Saddle Club.  His greatest achievement was being an owner and operator of nearly 700 acres in his farming career.  He will be greatly missed by his family.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Mercedes E. (Kramer) Clifton of Tecumseh, children, Stephen Clifton and wife Carole of Bennet, Scott Clifton and wife Diane of Tecumseh, Sherry (Clifton) Stephens and husband Vern Ray of Tecumseh and Michael Clifton and wife Juanita of Waverly, grandchildren, Steven Bouwens, Laurie Sader, Michelle   , Bonnie Chapman, Nicole Clifton and Timothy Clifton,  Raymond B. Clifton, Cheryl (Clifton) Hardenberger, Shawn Clifton, Kendra (Clifton) Gottula, Casey Clifton, Justin Clifton, Ryan Stephens, Brienne Stephens, Levi Clifton and Alex Clifton,  25 great-grandchildren,  2 great-great-grandchildren,  sisters, Rose Kerner of Tecumseh and June Thomas of Hamburg, IA, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Ruth, son, Bradley, grandson, Nathan Clifton and sister, Catherine Hall.                                              

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tecumseh, Nebraska with Rev. Jason Wolter officiating.           Closed casket visitation will be at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska, on Monday, April 4, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m.    Memorials may go to the family’s choice.   Interment will be in the Tecumseh Cemetery with full military honors by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Team and the Tecumseh American Legion Post #2 and VFW #8221.   Online condolences may be left @ www.wherrymortuary.com.
