Carol Eugene Smith

Carol Eugene Smith, 81 of rural Everest, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital. He was born on September 20, 1934 in Horton, Kansas the son of Charles and Augusta (Denton) Smith. Carol had a passion for farming. He enjoyed many hours in the field on his beloved John Deere equipment and tending to his livestock. He was a member and a Deacon at the Everest Christian Church, member of the Elks Lodge and served on the Washington Township board. Carol served in the U.S. Army National Guard. He had a passion for sports especially the KU Jayhawks and K.C. Royals. Carol enjoyed spending time with is family and always enjoyed hosting the family's annual cousin campout. On March 7, 1954 he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Grace Lanter at the Everest Christian Church. They just celebrated 62 years of marriage this year. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Smith of the home; five daughters, Jean Ann (Tom) Becker of Huron, Kansas, Karen (Robert) Johnson of Lenexa, Kansas, Kathy Schlax of Kansas City, Missouri, Debbie (Mike) Snyder of Valley Falls, Kansas and Linda (Mark) Crider of Stilwell, Kansas; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Prentice of Apache Junction, Arizona and Kay Gerjarasak of Sun City West, Arizona; two brothers, Charles (Nancy) Smith of Nebraska City, Nebraska and John (Sandy) Smith of Bella Vista, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Burial will be at the Miller Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Everest Christian Church or the American Diabetes Association and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
