Dorothy Elaine (Maag) Matthias, 84, of Highland, passed away Saturday afternoon, May 14, 2016, at Mosaic Life Care Center in St. Joseph, MO, surrounded by her children.

Dorothy was born January 22, 1932, in Osborne, KS, to Casper P. and Myrtle Luvelle Denison Maag. She grew up in St. Joseph and was a graduate of Lafayette High School. She married Fred Matthias, February 1, 1953, in St. Joseph. They were happily married for almost 60 years. Dorothy resided in Highland, KS, where she was a homemaker and returned to school earning her nursing degree from Hillyard Nursing in Atchison, KS. She was a devoted nurse for over 20 years at Heartland (Mosaic Life Care), and cared for her husband until his passing. Dorothy enjoyed her children and grandchildren, flower gardens, and her greatest passion “Jayhawk Basketball.” She enjoyed her many outings with her daughters going to concerts, plays, dinner or driving around on a Sunday afternoon. Dorothy was a member of Community of Christ Church in Fanning.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband in 2012, her parents and a brother Eugene Maag.

Survivors include sons: Rick (Linda) Matthias of Tecumseh, KS, Doug (Kathy) Matthias of St. Joseph, Greg (Suzanne) Matthias of Wichita, KS: daughters: Cinde (George Herbert) of St. Joseph, Michelle (Bob) Linebach of St. Joseph, Sheryl (Joe) Tumea of Des Moines, IA, Nanny (Lissa Boyd) Matthias of Silver Lake, KS. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include: Jeff (Kelsie) Matthias, (Brylie) Jessica Herbert, Shannon (Christina Loy) Matthias, (Syeria, Elizabeth, Joshua, Jordan & Ariana), Brandon Matthias, Michael, Andy and Clint Spruill, Samara Tumea. Cale (Ashley Nichols) Clark, Keaton (Annemeijn Koenen) Steele, Hayden Steele, Will Boyd, Dru (Bobbie Jo), Clay, Aubry Linebach (Hannah and Henley). Julia (Jarrett) Tyler. Eddie (Jill) Schuele (Sydney), Patty (Philip) Rodriguez (Ayden, Preston and Socorro). Vinnie and Matthew Schuele. She is also survived by several sisters in law and brothers in law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy will be sadly missed by all her children.


A Celebration of Dorothy’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at the Community of Christ Church in Fanning. Don Harter will officiate. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland after 10 a.m. Wednesday, where the family will meet from 6 until 8 that evening.
