August " Gene" Mengarelli
Pittsburg , KS

August “Gene” E. Mengarelli, 73, passed away at 10:27 p.m. Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Via Christi Hospital surrounded by his family.

He was born February 19, 1943 at his parent’s home in rural Girard, Kansas to August and Cleo Fern (Gilbert) Mengarelli. He graduated from Girard High School. He attended and graduated from Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, where he also played football. Later he graduated from Saint Paul School of Theology in Overland Park, KS.

On July 4, 1965, he was united in marriage to Doris Wiens at Inman, Kansas. They lived in many different places, following where Mr. Mengarelli taught and coached for 17 years. He was a teacher and coach at West Mineral, Southeast High School, Cherryvale and Kingman schools. He was called to ministry at Farlington United Methodist Church in Farlington, Kansas.  Mr. Mengarelli served as a minister for the Methodist Church in Longton, KS, Elk Falls, KS and Robinson, KS.

Membership was held in the First Church of the Nazarene in Pittsburg. He was also active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; helped with recovery groups and was a mentor to many. One of his greatest joys was being with family and mentoring those in need.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Mengarelli of the home; three sons, Greg Mengarelli and his wife, Sheila of Prescott, AZ, Kris Mengarelli and his wife, Amy of Pittsburg, and Darin Mengarelli and his wife, Becky of McCune, KS; one brother, Jim Mengarelli of Girard, KS; three sisters, Barbara Babcock of Arma, KS, Beverly Vogel of Topeka, KS, and Rachelle Mengarelli of Arma, KS; and ten grandchildren, Cameron, Brady, Austin, Brooklyn, Sheridan, Gavin, Lauren, Will, Karis, and Gunner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Roselle Gorrell.

Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 28, 2016 at First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Jim Sukraw officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery.  The casket will remain closed. Friends may call at the funeral home to sign the register book from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday.  There will also be a memorial service in Prescott, Arizona, date and time to be determined. The family suggests memorials to United Christian Youth Camp at Prescott, AZ or the First Church of the Nazarene in Pittsburg.  These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS  66762.  Friends may also send condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com.
