Dennis L. Hammersmith, 80, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2016 at the St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

He was born on October 21, 1936 in Walker, Kansas the son of Albert and Elenore (Dreiling) Hammersmith.

Dennis graduated from Immaculata High School, Leavenworth, Kansas in 1955. He worked at Leavenworth Steel until moving to Horton in 1964 starting a family business, Al Hammersmith and Son, Mfg. and later changed the name to Hammersmith Mfg & Sales, Inc.

Dennis served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church, Mission Lake Country Club, Iowa Thoroughbred Owners Breeders Association, (KTOBA), Kansas State Director of Like Father Like Son Fishing Circuit. He enjoyed golfing, horse racing, traveling, and most of all the fishing trips with family.

He is survived by his children, Paula (Brad) Nelson of Kimberling City, Missouri; Edward (Marian) Hammersmith, Overland Park, Kansas; John (Teresa) Hammersmith, Branson, Missouri; Matthew (Staci) Hammersmith of Horton, Kansas; step-daughter,, Michelle (Jeff) Parker of Topeka, Kansas; step-son, Shawn Mercer of Horton, Kansas; sisters, Ella Lewis of Punta Gorda, Florida; Theresa (Wes) Meyer of Hiawatha, Kansas; 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He shared his birthday with 3 great granddaughters, he called them his "3 Queens".

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Susan (Hoch) married in 1957 and wife Evelyn (Cox) married in 1975.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. on Monday evening at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas with visitation to follow. Burial will be at the St. Leo's Cemetery.
