Helen Bergman

Helen M. Bergman, 99, of Topeka formally of St. Benedict, Kansas, died December 1, 2016  at the Presbyterian Manor in Topeka.  Resident since November 7, 1996.

She was born November 8, 1917, on a farm northwest of St. Benedict, Kansas, the daughter of George and Louise Oenbring Schmitz. She attended St. Mary’s School and Bellview Country School.  She attended one year at Mt. St. Scholastica before returning to the family farm.

On June 1, 1939 she married Arthur L. Bergman at St. Mary’s Church, St. Benedict.  They lived on the Bergman farm northwest of St. Benedict.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society at St. Benedict.  She enjoyed cooking, baking, quilting, crocheting, planting flowers, and raising a large garden.  She also enjoyed making the altar cloths for the church.

Survivors are four sons, Eugene (Sonya)Bergman of Mayetta, Robert (Mary Jo) Bergman of Widefield, Co, and Erwin of Topeka and Galen (Betty) Bergman of Seneca, a daughter, Maxine (Mike) Becker of Topeka, Ks, a brother Norbert Schmitz of Axtell, a sister Norita Rempe of Hutchinson, and 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers Adrian Schmitz, Clarence, Francis A. Schmitz and Lambert Schmitz and a sister Martha Engelken.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, December 5, 2016 at 10:30A.M. at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be 2 and 7 P.M. Sunday at the Lauer Funeral Home.
