L.B. Grosfield
Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton
Hiawatha, KS

L.B. Grosfield, 86, of rural Hiawatha, Kansas passed away on 25 Jan 2017 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.

He was born in Horton, KS the only son of Henry and Ruth (Crawford) Grosfield. He lived his entire life near Willis, KS except for the time spent in military active duty. He graduated from Willis High School in 1948 as valedictorian of his class and began farming with his father after graduation.

He married his sweetheart, Pauline Earp, on 26 Sept 1953. They were blessed with four wonderful daughters. He continued to pursue his passion for farming throughout his life, semi-retiring in the latter years to care for Pauline.

L.B. served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 1948 until he officially retired as a Major in 1990. He began his military service when he joined the Kansas Army National Guard, Battery “C” 154th FA Battalion in Horton, KS in 1948. He was assigned in 1958 to Hq 154th FA BN in Hiawatha as Recon/Survey officer and returned to Horton as Commander of Battery B 2/130 FA from 1964 to 1966. He was called to active duty in April 1968, serving with the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam as Assistant Airfield Commander. He attended intelligence, chemical, and artillery schools in various locations in the U.S. He was also awarded the Bronze Star and received an Army Commendation Medal for his service.

L.B. was a member of the Everest Zion Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and cemetery board. He also served his community on the Mission Township board for many years. L.B. was a quiet, humble man who earned the respect and the admiration of many. He was a Godly example for his family every day.

Survivors include his 4 daughters, Tonya Jones (Michael Lambert) of Lawrence, KS, Michele (Bruce) Gaskell of rural Hiawatha, KS, Paula (Kevin) Hoops of Byron, NE, and Nada (Donnie) Uber of Peculiar, Mo, as well as his sister, Naideen Tucker of Moultrie, GA, 16 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and was anticipating the arrival of his 7th great grandchild. L.B. is preceded in death by his wife, Pauline, his parents, Henry and Ruth, and brother-in-law, Ronald Tucker. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, 28 January 2017, at Zion Lutheran Church north of Everest, Kansas.

The family will greet friends at 10:00 am prior to the service. Burial with Military Graveside Rights will be at the church cemetary immediately following the service.
