Larry D. Nordhus, 73, of Centralia, KS, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 4th after a brief struggle with cancer.

Larry was born on December 31, 1943 in Seneca, to Leo and Nora Haverkamp Nordhus. He grew up on the family farm south of St. Benedict. Larry was a graduate of St. Benedict High School and St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, OK.

He married Ellen K. (Shaughnessy) Nordhus on September 4, 1971, in Las Vegas, NV. After moving to Florida for a brief period, Larry and Ellen returned to their farm near Centralia, KS, where they raised five children and built a lifetime of memories together. In addition to farming, Larry milled wheat flour for the Benedictine Sisters’ altar bread department in Clyde, MO, Valley of Our Lady Monastery in Prairie Du Sac, WI, and Passionist Sisters in Ellisville, MO. Larry was an inventor and always looked for ways to improve processes. He was a creative man who enjoyed thinking outside the box. His selfless soul will be missed by his friends and family.

Larry is survived by Ellen, his loving wife of 46 years; sons and daughters, Reese (Angie) Nordhus of Baldwin City, KS; Larissa (Peter) Martin of Lincoln, NE; Kara (Jake) Palan of Kansas City, MO; Leah (Rob) Mueller of Overland Park, KS; Matthew Nordhus of Centralia, KS; and six grandchildren. Sisters and brothers, Leona Siess of Topeka, KS; Mary Beth (Bob) Vondenkamp of  Kelly, Clarence (Jane) Nordhus of Baileyville; Florian (Carolyn) Nordhus of Connell, WA; and David (Donna) Nordhus of Seneca, KS; and many nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Nora (Haverkamp) Nordhus; two sisters, Norita (Sr. Trinitas) Nordhus; Celine Chu; and a brother, Albert Nordhus.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 and 7 P.M. on September 6, 2017 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 A.M. on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Larry will be laid to rest at a private burial in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in Larry’s memory to Benedictine Sisters in Clyde, MO.
