Mildred Cochren-Sherwood, 104, passed away November 23, 2017 at Medicalodges in Holton. She was born June 24, 1913 in Centralia, KS, the daughter of George and Jessie (Tate) Hales.

She attended a one room country school in Nemaha County and graduated from Centralia High School. She later graduated from Washburn University with a degree in Elementary Education. Mildred began her 32 year teaching career in one room school houses in Nemaha County. She later taught in Pleasant Valley schools, Circleville, and Holton elementary schools. She taught Youth Sunday School at the Methodist Church in Centralia for many years.

Mildred married Delmer Cochren of Circleville, KS in 1945. Delmer preceded her in death in 1993. She later married Glenn Sherwood of Larned, KS. Glenn preceded her in death in 2005.

Mildred was a member of the Circleville United Methodist Church, Circleville UMW, Jackson County Retired Teachers, Friends of Hospice, Menninger Bible Study, Senior Citizens of Circleville, Ayli Bridge Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Hawley of Shawnee, KS; a son, Hal Cochren (Joyce) of Holton; four granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Shirley Schafer (Dick) of Colorado Springs, CO.

In addition to both of her husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Rex Hales and three sisters, Alma Wenger, Helen Hays and Audrey Davis.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 1, 2017 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in the Netawaka Cemetery, Netawaka, KS. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or Circleville United Methodist Church c/o Mercer Funeral Home, P.O.
