James " Jim" Garrett, Jr.

James David "Jim" Garrett, Jr., 63, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, November 23, 2017, shortly after arrival at Hiawatha Community Hospital.

Jim was born August 1, 1954 in Kansas City, KS, the eldest of three sons born to James SR., and Betty Parrish Satterfield Garrett. Jim earned his GED and went on to also receive a vocational schooling degree. Moving to the Hiawatha area in his early 20s he worked as a supervisor for the Flair Fold cabinet factory which, he eventually gave up to do car mechanics full time. He worked at WENGER TRANSMISSION for many years before opening his own garage in 1991 down at the bottom of hill behind his house until 2001 when his health would no longer allow him to do so full time.

July 1983 he married Linda Overfield and were happily married through the remainder of his life. He was blessed with, three daughters, two sons, and one grandson they raised. Stacy Mackey (Cliff)of Hiawatha, Kari Clary (Chad) of Highland, and Renee Bostic (Randy) of Hiawatha, Jeff Luoma (Julie) of Kansas City, James Garrett, III, (Heather) of Tulsa, Ok; Chazz Exon, Olathe, KS. He was the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren, and great-grandpa of 2. Also surviving is his mother Betty Satterfield of Hiawatha; and a brother Claude “Shorty” Garrett of Tennessee.

Jim is preceded in death by his father James Garrett SR., along with his stepfather Cordell Satterfield also his younger brother Bobby Garrett and granddaughter Paige Bostic.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Tuesday, where the family will gather from 7-8:30p.m.

Funeral services are set for Wednesday, November 29th at 11am at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home of Hiawatha with Pastor Tom Stone officiating. Interment will be held at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha with gathering to follow immediately at the Family Life Center building in Hiawatha
