Robert O. Halling, 97, formerly of Denton, Kansas died Monday, December 18, 2017 at Vintage Park of Atchison.

Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, December 22, 2017 at 2:30 P.M. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Bendena, Kansas with Rev. Francis Bakyor as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Benedict’s Church Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Friday, December 22nd from 1:30 until 2:30 P.M. at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Benedict’s Catholic Church at Bendena and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, 208 North 5th Street, Atchison, Kansas 66002. Robert was born October 8, 1920 at his parent’s home in rural Denton, Kansas the son of Bernard and Julia Horsh Halling. He attended Maur Hill Prep School in Atchison,graduating in 1938.

Robert was engaged in farming in the Denton and Bendena, Kansas area all of his adult life until his retirement. He also enjoyed carpentry work and made several pieces of furniture for his home.

He and S. Virginia Dutton were united in marriage on October 12, 1948 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church at Bendena, Kansas. Mrs. Halling preceded him in death on July 7, 1998.

Robert served in the United States Army during World War II with the European Theater Operations. He began his service on August 21, 1942 and served until his honorable discharge on September 11, 1945 as a Sargent.

He was a life-long member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church at Bendena, Kansas where he formerly served as a lector, church council member, member of the church choir and for two years he was the church “handyman”. He also served as a Denton volunteer fireman for thirty years, fourteen year member of the Denton City Council and a life-long Farm Bureau member.

Robert is survived by a son, Robert F. (DeeAnna) Halling, Bendena, KS; a daughter, Linda (Ron) Chambers, Harrisonville, MO; a brother, John (Dorothy) Halling, Denton, KS; two sisters, Annie Cipriano, Yorktown, VA; Addie Walters, Olathe, KS; ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Halling, four brothers, Barney, Pete, Luke and Joseph Halling and four sisters, Irene Halling, Lucille Haupt, Betty Johnson and Julie Ann Elias.
