Fred Schumaker, 93, of Whiting, Kansas, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the Horton Community Hospital.

He was born August 17, 1924 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the second of the three children born to Wilhelm and Freda Steinle Schumaker.

Fred grew up in the Sabetha area and moved to the Whiting area when he was around 19 years old where he began farming with his father. Fred served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his enlistment in the Army he returned to the Whiting area to continue farming with his family.

Survivors include his brother-in-law Kenneth Dale Thornton of Whiting, Kansas; his sister-in-law Maxine Schumaker of Holton, Kansas; nephews Larry & wife Cindy Thornton of Whiting, Kansas; Dennis & wife Gay Schumaker of Whiting, Kansas; niece Debbie Schumaker of Holton, Kansas; seven great nieces and nephews and nine great-great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Willie Schumaker, a sister, Hilda Thornton and a niece, Cindy Kay Oxandale.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, January 12, 2018 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time. Burial with Military graveside rites will be at Springhill Cemetery, Whiting, Kansas. Memorials may be sent to the Mission Village Living Center and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
