Alfred " Alf" Roeder

Alfred H. "Alf" Roeder, 89, of Seneca, died Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

He was born on August 31, 1928 on a farm near Seneca, to Leo G. and Frances Shaeffler Roeder.  He attended Diamond Country School before attending Sts. Peter & Paul; where he graduated from the 8th Grade.  He graduated from Baileyville High School with the Class of 1946. After graduation, he served his country during the Korean War as a member of Battery A 145th FA Battalion; as a member of the Artillery division. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

As a young man Alf began farming with his brother Melvin, and they had a cow calf livestock operation, and operated a custom corn shelling business. He also enjoyed helping his father buying and selling farm equipment. After the death of his Father, he took over Roeder Implements.  He expanded and specialized in AC Round Balers and New Holland Bale Wagons.  He was business minded and knew when to buy and when to sell.  In 1981, he purchased shares in the Hiawatha John Deere Dealership.

On December 1, 1984 he married Darlene Stallbaumer Nolte at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. The couple celebrated 33 years of marriage.

Alfred was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, St Joseph’s Society, the Knights of Columbus Council 1769 and the Seneca Veterans of Foreign War. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, dancing and farming.  

He was preceded in death by his father, Leo George on August 29, 1970; his mother Frances Caroline on November 29, 1969; brothers, Matthias Roeder on December 15, 1989 and Melvin Roeder on June 11, 2013; and a sister, Viola Schmidt on November 2, 1994. A grandchild Jason Nolte on June 21, 2014.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene; and step-children Sharon (Daniel) Ketter of Manhattan, Robert (Kathleen) Nolte of Seneca, Thomas (Marilyn) Nolte of Centralia, Kris (Denise) Nolte of Seneca, Carol (Todd) Surdez of Vermillion and Janell (David) Holt of Topeka. 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews that were very fond of their uncle.  

Rosaries are 2 and 7 P.M. Thursday, February 22nd at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 A.M. Friday, February 23, 2018 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
